Art Deco Glamour

Monday, May 24th, 2010

You may remember I recently advertised for some interns to work with me during the summer, one of those chosen was Heather Cole who will soon be launching her company EvelynCole. She has been an enormous help so far, this is her last week with us so I thought we would bid her goodbye with a mood board she has designed.

Theme: 1920’s / 1930’s

Mood: Glamour / Art Deco

Colour: Cream/Ivory with an accent of black

The inspiration for this board is the glamour of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Although the fashion of the time was about simplicity, the 1920’s was all about luxury! Geometric shapes and lines were popular and stationery such as this found on bellafigura would set the theme for your wedding day!

Wedding Attire

For your bridal gown a stunning crossover dress worn over a silk camisole such as this one from couture designer Lindsay Fleming as seen on Rock ‘n’ Roll Bride shouts glamour without being OTT. To complement this team this with an elegant bridal bouquet of white / cream calla lilies, finished with vintage lace ribbon and an art deco brooch scoured from a local antique fair or a family heirloom.

For your bridesmaids these dresses from Monsoon as seen here with a black skirt add some contrast to the colour theme. Rather than opt for bouquets why not have your bridesmaids hold functional but pretty flapper ivory handbags as seen here, wear embellished pearl jewellery such as the bracelet seen here, and have their hair finished off with a pearl or antique art deco hair comb.

For the bridegroom, best men and ushers a tuxedo as seen here was essential attire for the 1920’s gentleman, partner this with a simple Calla Lilie boutonnière.

Transport

This 1930’s vintage convertible car as seen here would be perfect for a glamorous and memorable arrival to your ceremony and reception.

Reception

Greet your guests after the ceremony with a champagne punch and martini drinks reception. Why not have the drinks served in classic glass saucers and martini glasses and to create an atmosphere hire in a jazz saxophonist.

For the wedding breakfast a stunning hotel or stately home ballroom adorned with crystal chandeliers such as this one here would be the perfect setting. The key is to keep the table décor simple, rectangle tables rather than round keeping in tune with the geometric theme, with perhaps one tall floral centrepiece dominating the table and a hint of glamour bought to the table by these gold beaded charger plates. A square fondant iced cake decorated with art deco sugar plaques as seen here would be the perfect focal point.

Guest favours such as these hip flasks would be perfect for male guests, and for the ladies vintage art deco brooches from your local antique fairs and centres.

To liven the party up for the evening why not transform a ballroom into a jazz club. Position small round tables lit by LED table lamps around the dance floor, hire in a jazz band to play modern and classic tunes and have waitresses present ice cream cones and bowl food to guests from cinema / usherette trays.

Wedding Planning Excellence

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Last weekend I attended the annual ‘Wedding Planning Excellence’ seminar held at the beautiful Fawsley Hall in Northamptonshire. Held over 2 days there were a range of speakers from business coaches to florists. I came away very inspired not to mention I was able to network with my wonderful colleagues at the UKAWP. I’m already looking forward to next years seminar!

Design Tips: Marquee Events

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Over the last 7 years I have organised many marquee events and have become known as an expert amongst planners and clients alike. Personally I love them, yes its HARD work but the results are worth it. Below are some design tips that work in marquees.

  • Think about the carpet colour and chair seat pads carefully, they should match your wedding theme and colours, not clash, if in doubt go neutral.
  • Be imaginative with the design, if your theme is butterflies then why not have a butterfly lining? Try crescent moon for custom made linings.
  • Lighting is key for weddings now so ask your marquee company about up-lighters or spot lights on tables from above, this creates a very powerful effect. Candelabras look amazing when night begins to fall. In the garden place garden lanterns on trees and in flower beds to make a feature of them, if the weather is nice hopefully guests will be spending time outside.

  • Arrange the layout so minimal disruption is causes when moving furniture. Trying to remove a long top table form the dance floor when evening guests have arrives is not much fun. I advise avoiding having tables on the dance floor unless absolutely necessary.
  • Speak with your florist about creating a high impact display, small low arrangements just get lost in the ceiling height. A combination of high/low arrangements works best

  • Ask to see the marquee chairs before agreeing to hire them, some hire chairs should have been taken out of service years ago. Ask for spares so you can only place out the good ones, have someone on site to take delivery of the chairs and quality check them.
  • If there is one thing that can break a theme it is rough and starched linen. Speak with your planner or caterer about hiring in some designer linen, there is a range of colours and styles you can get. Ensure the cloths are to the floor .
  • Try raising the dance floor and have steps leading up to it. Line alternative pots of flowers with up-lighters to light the dance floor from below.
  • Many people now have big displays on the marquee poles (if traditional marquee) but why not ask your florists to create a palm tree or willow tree with twigs and blooms?

Proposal ideas

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

I originally posted this in February 2009 but still think the ideas are relevant for those proposing in 2010. Remember the key to a perfect proposal is preparation so plan ahead!

So if you are thinking about proposing how can you do so in a memorable way? When my husband proposed nearly 10 years ago he wanted to propose on the beach in Cyprus but somehow that never happened and instead it was at home in the kitchen! Assuming you want to make more of an impression I have put together some ideas to show your loved one how creative you can be.

  1. Arrange a photo shoot with a photographer, have some natural shots to emphasise why your man loves you, perhaps in locations that have meaning to you both? You could either have them enlarged or combine some shots in a small album, the last shot could be of you holding a sign say ‘Will you marry me?’.
  2. I loved this idea from http://www.everythingvalentinesday.com/proposing-idea/top-ten-ideas.html Invite your partner over to your place. And just before he/she is about to come, write the words “I Love You or Will You Marry Me” on the lawns of your house with flower petals. He/she is going to love it.
  3. Arrange a treasure hunt, start by sending a clue to their work with a red rose or put the clue in a box filled with fresh petals, this would lead to various locations each time with a clue and roses/petals. This could end at your home with petals leading to your location or perhaps your favourite restaurant?
  4. Ask a baker to bake a cake and place an engagement ring inside for them to discover, perhaps in a small bag with a proposal note inside?
  5. Of course if you an imaginative and dedicated person you can create an elaborate ruse like this man did when proposing to his fiancé. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PzETduMsnE Or if you think you are the knight in shining armour then how about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fu6n2cgOTo !
  6. Alternatively why not hire a local videographer and create your own mini-film and upload onto yourtube? Email her the link and wait and see what her response is.

Have fun, once she/he says yes why not visit our website to see how we could help you create the perfect wedding.
