Glide hand in hand at Somerset House

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Whenever I see people ice-skate I sigh with jealousy because try as I might, I simply cannot skate, luckily my husband is just as bad as me so skating is banned in our house!

However, that doesnt mean the co-ordinated among you shouldnt enjoy the romance of skating hand in hand. If there is one venue this winter that sums up romance is has to be Somerset House in London.

This year Tiffany & Co are presenting the skating and so have taken part in the design and decor. Whilst there visit the Tiffany Tuck shop where jewellery, cupcakes and other treats are on offer.

Venue focus: Hengrave Hall

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Last week I visited a new venue that has opened its doors to weddings. Hengrave Hall is located just north of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk and boasts almost fifty acres of sweeping lawns and meadows, a majestic lake, and its own idyllic chapel. Its grace and historical charm offers the perfect ambience for any number of memorable.

As you can imagine I have visited many venues over the years but Hengrave enchanted me in a way others have not. Yes this Tudor Mansion has been renovated and decorated with utmost care, but it is more then that, I think perhaps its it little touches that have been put in place or maybe it’s the vibrant history. I shall try to highlight some of the magic in this post but if you are wishing to marry in Suffolk do go visit for yourself.

Your history lesson

Built in 1525 by a wealthy cloth merchant, Thomas Kytson, the Hall is a stunning example of the great architecture of medieval England and took almost thirteen years to complete. Composed of brick and stonework, its structure reveals the Roman influence over the Tudors and, despite its fifteenth-century embellishments, certain features disclose its Saxon origins, such as the church tower just east of the Hall itself. In 1578, Sir Thomas Kytson the younger entertained Queen Elizabeth on her progress to and from Norwich. Many further tales across the centuries are to be unraveled in Hengrave’s treasure-trove of secrets: a turbulent marriage; the invasion of Cromwell’s soldiers; a daughter desired by three suitors and married to each in turn; a Baronet by Charles II; a page of honour to Louis XIV; the Canonesses of St Augustine; and a heritage lasting nine generations.

Some of the rooms

The Great Banqueting Hall, completely restored with carved figured finials, regal arches and a large open fireplace. It offers space and grandeur for civil ceremonies, conference speeches, significant evening dinners or events or weddings.
Seats a maximum of 140 people

The Long Gallery has fine white timber panelling, crystal chandeliers, subtle tones and charming view of the west garden, is perfect for wedding breakfasts or other jovial affairs.
Seats a maximum of 130 people.

The Chapel, known as the Oratory, contains a beautiful sixteenth-century window with stained glass, depicting twenty-one biblical scenes from the Creation to the Last Judgement. I especially loved the lookout tower and could imagine someone keeping watch for the Kings army whilst a catholic service was taking place.

Play Room is fully equipped with a selection of games and toys to ensure younger guests are entertained. It has the most amazing vibrant chandelier in the room. I think this is the first venue I have visited that has a dedicated room for younger guests. The owner has also created a baby changing room near the toilets which again is a little touch welcomed by mothers everywhere.

Queen Elizabeth’s Chamber, so called because Elizabeth I is reported to have used the chamber during her visit to Hengrave, is elegantly panelled in oak, with Tudor roses, fleurs de lis and the initials ‘ER’ moulded into the ceiling. It is the perfect location for the bride as she prepares for her big day.

Blue Chamber is a great ‘den’ for the groom and his ushers, with various games including a pool table it gives them a chance to unwind. It also has an oversized clock so they wont be late and a wet room.

Toilets ok I won’t go into the details but wow, I doubt there are many 5 star hotels that have toilets this good!

St John the Lateran church within the grounds is licensed for all christian weddings EXCLUDING Church of England ceremonies but you can have a blessing.

Prices

The prices varies depending on the day of the week and season but range from £3-6k. All catering is handled by Le Talbooth Caterers.

Venue focus: Stapleford Park

On Thursday I visited Stapleford Park with one of my clients marrying there in 2010.

Stapleford House

Stapleford Park

This was the first time I have visted the venue and it was truly stunning. Not only was the upkeep immaculate but the staff were friendly and professional at all times. When I arrived staff were waiting in the carpark to take my bags for me. Throughout the day they asked whether we required further refreshments. The service was such that I’m wondering if I can convince my husband to whisk me away for a weekend!

You can hire the venue on an exclusive basis or just the rooms you require for your ceremony, drink reception and wedding breakfast.

Queens College - Oxford

Monday, August 10th, 2009

On Saturday I visited Queens College in Oxford with some clients marrying there next July. This was my first visit to ‘Queens’ and was thoroughly excited about viewing this truly historical establishment. My bride went to Queens College and always said this was where she would be married one day. The chapel was truly stunning; unfortunately none of my photos could possibly do it justice.

Being summer the college itself was quiet although the high street was awash with tourists visiting the area. The College is not generally open to visitors although tours can be arranged by contacting the local Tourist Information Office.

Venues

Each month we highlight one of the beautiful venues we have worked at or particularly love, in and around East Anglia

Layer Marney Towers - Colchester, Essex

I’ve worked at Layer Marney Towers a number of occasions and each time the design of the wedding has been dramatically different. I think this venue is incredibly versatile and I love working here.

lmt-gatehouse

Layer Marney Tower was built between 1515 and 1525 and is the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in the country. Henry 1st Lord Marney was Henry VIII’s Lord Privy Seal and he built himself a house which was, he thought, magnificent enough for a person of his position.

Corsellis Room - ceremonies can take place here between 10a.m - 1p.m, a later ceremony can take place provided the reception is booked at Layer Marney. This room is located on the first floor of the tower and can accommodate 120 people, this can be reached by stairs or list for the less able guests.

Long Gallery - the reception takes place here, beautiful wood panelling around the room with a huge log fire in middle of room, this can be used when it is winter. The beaming is gorgeous and the floor well looked after, in fact every night after a function the room is cleared and floors polished. Can accommodate 140 people seated and 180 for stand up buffet and dancing.  The catering is handled via Bouquet Garni who have many years experience working at Layer Marney. There is a large entrance hall with a gallery, from here guests can sit away from the noise but still see what is happening in main room.

With their compliments - you have complimentary use of The Maythorn,  their chauffeur driven 1931 Rolls Royce + use of the Bridal Suite, a luxurious apartment for your wedding, from 1pm on the day of your wedding reception through to 11am the following day.

Each month we highlight one of the beautiful venues we have worked at or particularly love, in and around East Anglia.

This month it is Leez Priory in Chelmsford, Essex

Leez Priory is a 450 year old Tudor mansion set in 40 acres of parkland complete with lakes, lawns and a sweeping driveway. It is hired out on an exclusive basis so you can be confident there will be no other wandering brides around. There are 5 areas licensed for civil ceremonies suitable for most sizes of weddings and each season including the 60ft high Tudor tower which has the serenity of a church, the wood paneled Great Hall or my favourite outside under the carriageway.

Venue Focus - Vaulty Manor

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

In the first of a new monthly series exploring the venues I have worked in around East Anglia we are starting with Vaulty Manor in Essex where I have worked on a number of weddings.

Baronial Hall - Vaulty Manor

Baronial Hall - Vaulty Manor

Description

16th Century Manor house with a renovated 17th century barn and new Baronial Hall surrounded by 12 acres of countryside, not a single neighbour in sight. As you walk in the barn the bar is on the left (covered throughout ceremony). Upstairs there is a gallery where the toilets are, on the gallery there is a piano at one end and soft seating on another.

Ceremonies take place in the listed barn for a maximum of 200, once the ceremony is finished you walk through to the restored barn with full length windows at the side and one end of the room with French doors leading onto the terrace. The room is very light and peaceful and overlooks cornfields. Recently they extended the hall allowing a sit down wedding breakfast for up to 250 guests; smaller weddings do not look lost as the room has a hidden and discreet wall thus reducing the size of the hall.

There is no hire charge but they do stipulate minimum numbers. A huge added bonus to Vaulty Manor is the exclusive accommodation on site for up to 80 guests. You are not required to book any of the rooms but having accommodation at stumbling distance for guests is normally appreciated!
