Bridal Dilemmas

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Q: I’m getting really worried about to choose the best supplier, how do I know if they are experienced and suitable?

Ok a few simple rules that should put you on the right road. Firstly never, ever pay for a consultation with a supplier - if they want to charge walk away, you shouldn’t have to pay for the privilege of them selling to you! Secondly ask for references, can you contact some independently? Ask if they belong to any trade associations as this can help prove their professionalism. Ask to see samples of work, if photographer/videographer ask to see a complete wedding not just a show reel. Also trust your instincts, if something doesn’t feel right walk away. And finally don’t be pushed around, all very well supplier/venues giving opinions but it is YOUR wedding.

Wedding Cheesecakes

Monday, June 28th, 2010

cheesecake1

My friends and family will find this a strange blog post for me to write, why? I absolutely cannot eat cheese, even fromage frais turns my stomach! But, I do appreciate I’m the minority and most of the population adore cheese. For this reason I could anticipate many of you loving the wedding cakes available from the English cheesecake company . Even to me a non cheese eater, they look very tempting.

The prices range from £325 (3 tier) to £575 (5 tier) so the cost compared to traditional cake makers is very reasonable. Sigh, really wish I liked cheese …….

By Appointment Only Design

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Over the weekend I visited By Appointment Only Design with one of my clients to finalise the design for her July wedding. Its always a joy meeting with Javier & Tony as they are so enthusiastic about creating inspirational designs for clients. Just from arriving at their Chiltern Street Boutique you can sense the creativity overflowing onto the street with plinths and floral displays outside the shop.

The boutique has an array of containers within the shop used at the numerous functions they organise not to mention the beautifully scented candles. I highly recommend you visit the boutique especially as you can combine with a visit to the many bridal dress designers on Chiltern Street. They also have a blog highlighting their recent events which is always inspiring to look through.

The art of boudoir photography

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

First it was Trash the Dress.  Now another US-inspired wedding industry phenomenon is gaining huge popularity in the UK: boudoir photography.

 as010

Many brides-to-be are fastening on to the idea that it makes an intriguing and surprising wedding or honeymoon gift for their new husband.  Some fine art for his and her eyes only. I know some of my clients have scheduled some boudoir shots whilst they are getting their wedding underwear on.

But what is boudoir photography exactly?  Put simply, it is artistic, beautiful images of a woman in her lingerie.  Not surprisingly, boudoir photography has its roots in French noir imagery (boudoir literally means “to pout”).  Whilst the photography is always about beautiful lingerie and sensuality, this theme is often conveyed through dark shadows, understatement and perhaps enigma.  The photography tends to suggest that the woman is very feminine, liberated and most importantly, fully in control.  Certainly, it is generally not about glamour, nudity, or even direct eroticism.

 hr019

The best boudoir photographers are skilled at bringing out the best in women by using a subtle caress of light to create and intimate atmosphere - and careful posing to bring out the woman’s individuality.  The more relaxed and trusting the subject is, the better the results.  Results that aim to be treasured for a lifetime.

 Checklist for Boudoir Photography

  1. Does the style of the photography impress and excite you? Ask to see examples of previous work.
  2. Rapport with the photographer is important. If booking with a large or national company, which photographer do you get?  Can you meet them beforehand and see their individual work?
  3. How will your images be presented? The albums and other products on offer should ideally have a sumptuous, but personal and private feel to them.
  4. Check the credentials of the photographer. Are they professionally qualified with the MPA or BIPP?
  5. If it is a male photographer, will he be accompanied by a woman?
  6. In what environment does the photography shoot take place?  A luxurious hotel suite may often more be attractive than a studio if the latter has a clinical and assembly-line feel to it.
  7. What else is included as part of the experience? Some package include spa treatments and make-up, for example.

Scented Candles

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I use candles at most of my weddings and like to use scented ones in lounge areas so i was intrigued when contacted by Alesia from Alesia Barry Candles. They specialise in two main product types - scented container candles for wedding tables and favours and pillar candles for wedding centrepieces.  The container candles are all subtly fragranced and the pillar candles are tastefully decorated using Swarovski Crystal Elements. The candles are then finished off with a choice of ribbon which can be tailored to match the chosen wedding theme colour.

They use up to 7% of fragrance in the candles and are delicately scented so as not to be too over powering at a venue. As a lover of scented candles I was sent their English Rose candle to see for myself if it burnt evenly and released the fragrance sufficiently. I can honestly say I was very impressed with the clean design of the candle but also the pretty fragrance it released.

Do pop along to her website, is there a fragrance that will suit your wedding?

How cute?!

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Recently when reading the blog from Love My Dress I was delighted to read an article on My Vintage Party who hire vintage crockery etc for events. It would seem they have added to their portfolio with something a little larger.

They now have Lola, a gorgeous 1960s renovated vintage caravan, available to hire from £49.  At only 8ft long she is tiny but oh so cute! She has been professionally re-sprayed in a gorgeous sage green and off white to complement the vintage style interior, an abundance of polka dots and Cath Kidston. She can seat up to four at her table, which can be removed.

Not sure all my family would fit in there but seriously this would be perfect when organising vintage tea parties, I can just see it now next to my marquee functions sitting in the field.

Winter Wonderland with Flo & Percy

Thursday, December 17th, 2009
I discovered Flo & Percy back in October and instantly fell in love so I keep tabs on their website for any new products. When I saw their Winter Wonderland collection I knew I just had to share with you.
Firstly I adore their new Feather headband as yet unnamed and unpriced, however it shows on the website and Brides can register their interest with them, it will be launched in January. It was inspired by the 1920s and swan lake ballerinas.

Another piece I also love is the White Queen comb.

Recently Flo & Percy were nominated for best hair accessory in Perfect Wedding Magazine awards.
Hmmmm now what excuse can I make in order to purchase the comb? To view more of Flo & Percy products visit their website.

A hidden artform

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Alison Russell

Alison Russell

Over the years I have hired Alison Russell on many occasions to provide a silhouette service at my weddings. I find this romantic artform is perfect for the vintage and garden receptions I organise. I was delighted to find out Alison has a new website which includes a video clip on the home page of what she does, seeing is far easier then explaining!

Guests receive their portrait in a special card that can also be custom printed to include specific details of the event such as the names of the wedding couple, date and venue details to create a perfectly personalised memento to take home and frame.
