Thanksgiving Day

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Tomorrow will be ‘Thanksgiving Day’ mainly celebrated in America and Canada. But what is ‘Thanksgiving’? In essence it is a harvest festival when people give thanks for the harvest, now people use the holiday to give thanks to everything and everyone positive in their life. It tends to be a large celebration with friends and family, and the food? Well turkey of course!

If you are holding a thanksgiving dinner this year then we hope the below board will inspire you.

Be honest about your budget!

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

As part of their consultation I naturally ask clients if they have a budget, in past years clients would give me a rough budget but I’ve noticed a bit of a trend recently when clients say there is no budget determined. Far from being helpful this makes it very difficult to price what their wedding will cost.

After all there is a huge difference in weddings costing £10k compared to £30k and even more when the wedding is £80k+. Without a broad spectrum of a budget I have no idea as to what they want for their wedding. I pride myself on being an honest wedding planner so when a client gives me a budget I don’t set out to spend every penny or intentionally go over budget so I earn more! In fact my budget breakdowns are pretty accurate and we rarely go over the agreed budget.

Think about it another way, I have suppliers I recommend in each price bracket and I only recommend those the client can afford. There is nothing worse then seeing and falling in love with something only to discover it’s out of your budget. For example the bands I use can range from £700 - £4,000. Is there a big difference between them? To be honest yes, my top bands are fantastic but I only recommend them IF the client can afford it.

The same can be said of flowers, you could enter a meeting with a florist saying there is no budget, the florist will then quote giving you everything you wanted, you receive the quote and fall off your chair because you don’t want to spend that much so ask them to cut down. Wouldn’t it have been easier to say this is my budget in the first place?

So, the moral of the story is not every supplier is trying to spend ALL your money. We are only trying to give you the wedding or party you desire but without knowing what you want to spend, expectations are rarely met.

Please be honest with us!

Best Butlers

Monday, September 14th, 2009

On Saturday I had a rare night out celebrating the 50th birthday of a close friend and wedding colleague. The theme of the night was 70’s and the function room was decorated accordingly. It was hilarious seeing everyone with wigs and flares.

The birthday girl decided to treat herself to best butlers after seeing them at a recent wedding show in Brentwood. They were there to hand out drinks and canapes for a few hours.

Summer Cocktails

Monday, July 6th, 2009

The traditional drink for the drink reception is champagne but couples are now being more adventurous with their choices coming up with signature drinks. It is usual to have at least 2 alcohol options and 1 soft option available. Allow 3 drinks per person and if it is summer have jugs of iced water available to quench guests thirst.

I’ve listed the cocktails I find my clients prefer but do visit You and Your Wedding where they have 10 fabulous cocktails for you to consider.

Real wedding: Karen & Rob

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

In pt 2 of our report on Karen & Robs (you can see pt 1 here) party we show you some more of the design details used throughout the evening. Because we wanted the party to reflect the slightly bohemian personalities of Rob & Karen we decided to used lots of accessories from the house. We used candle holders, lanterns and even christmas decorations on the design. Lisa and I had such fun in the morning bringing all the elements together.

On alternate tables to the flowers we had pink glass candelabras with gold candles. The tables were clothed in white linen with a gold satin runner.

We placed various lanterns outside on pathways, below is an image which includes the invitations made by Momental Designs.

We used christmas decorations in vases but also hung mini mirror balls from the trees.

Organza material was used along the metal fence with little christmas decorations hanging from it.

Karen bought some blackboard paint and used on some old wood she had, we then wrote all the drinks on the board and once sold crossed them out. It was very effective and looked great.

Real Wedding: Karen & Rob

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

At new year Karen & Rob were married in a small ceremony in Thailand. They contacted me to organise a celebration of their wedding for friends and family.

Karen & Rob

They wanted it to reflect their eccentric personalities with a big emphasis on it being a party, therefore there were no wedding elements like cake cutting, first dance or speeches. We decided to hold the party in their garden in May when the weather was likely to be warmer. Chinese Hat marquees took over the whole garden from the kitchen to the summer house, this ensured that everyone was undercover and gave the party a more magical feel.

Karen looked stunning in her dress of reminded me of a greek goddess, it was from the Manuel Mota range from Pronovias Bond Street. The flowers were in pink & green vases from Ikea and filled with flowers by Karens Mum.

When guests arrived they were greeted with a selection of drinks and canapees served by Bespoke Caterers.
