An English Rose

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Occasionally there are perks to being a wedding planner, very evident this week when I was sent a gorgeous bouquet of roses by David Austin . The aroma and texture of their roses is like none other, the petals look so delicate brimming with romance. I was especially pleased as they arrived on my birthday.

I love roses, possibly because its the only flower that seems to survive my ‘gardening’ but thats another topic altogether! I’m sure you have seen the name David Austin when looking at rose bushes from your garden centre. Now however the roses are available for the bridal market either via your florist or by asking them direct to make the bouquets for you.

Do take the time to view their site and request a bridal brochure and see for yourself how beautiful the roses are.

A tropical romance

Monday, April 27th, 2009

8 years ago I married Paul at Le Sport in St Lucia, it was beautiful and romantic. We were fortunate that in the 2 weeks at Le Sport ours was the only wedding, thus we felt important and special . Our luxury room overlooked the ocean and was very tranquil.

Yesterday was our anniversary so I felt it appropriate to have a mood board that reflects the romance we felt in St Lucia. One day we will return but for now we have our memories.

The business travellers guide to weddings

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

It is generally thought 26% brides now hire wedding planners for certain aspects of their wedding. But why? Surely organising a wedding isn’t difficult and with the support of family it can be planned easily? The fact of the matter is that weddings have become far more complex and stylish then in previous years, it can take approx. 250/300 hours to organise once you counter in the research into venues and suppliers let alone the time spent fine tuning the design.

So just how stressful would it be trying to speak to suppliers and venues when you spend days on end travelling with business? The short answer is you have to be organised and pre plan your diary for appointments. You would also really benefit from the help of a professional wedding planner who are experienced at organising weddings thus saving you time & unnecessary stress.

But, not everyone wants to hire a wedding planner so I hope the following tips help. In addition you may benefit from reading our ‘wedding planning guide series & ‘etiquette series’

  1. Wedding website - you can tell fiends and family about the engagement and post details of the date and venue once finalised. Your gift list could be accessed via it and guests could send in their RSVP’s. If you load with accommodation and travel details guests need never bother you with endless questions.
  2. Lists - compile a list of tasks to complete and breakdown into months, start one task at a time before moving onto the next task. Be realistic about your goals in order to remain motivated.
  3. Delegate - organising a wedding is a huge task and can be incredibly stressful, don’t go it alone. Ask key family members to take on certain tasks for you and ask if anyone has any special talents, perhaps an Aunt can make your cake?
  4. Suppliers - make sure you ask for references from suppliers and always read contracts before signing on the dotted line. Ask whether they are insured and quality check their work, whether cake tasting, viewing photographers albums or visiting a live band one night.
  5. Budgeting - if you don’t produce a budget costs will spiral out of control, regardless of whether you wanted to spend £20k or £120k. Ensure you have a contingency amount as you will always add something you never thought you would want or need.
  6. Payments - compile a list of what the payment structure is for suppliers, detailing their deposits and final payment details.
  7. Block your time - set aside a weekend when you vett suppliers, try to see a few in one day thus using your time efficiently..
  8. Put it in writing - ensure you have contracts from all suppliers but also put in writing any requests to the reception venue. Even if you have had a long conversation you need assurance your requests will be carried out fully.
  9. Wedding day management - if you do not have a wedding planner then delegate someone close to you but outside the wedding party, to check the reception set up and confirm suppliers have complied with your instructions.
  10. Table décor - remember less is more, don’t over clutter your tables but keep it simple. If you have place cards then put them in a separate bag or envelope for each table to make it easy for the venue to lay out.  If you want cutlery, napkins and favours placed in a certain way then set it up and photograph it, this gives the venue or planner a clear idea of what your desire.

Happy Birthday Mum

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Today I am celebrating 2 birthdays: my Mums who I’m sure will celebrate quietly, and a client who is celebrating loudly with a rock festival party in his garden on Saturday. I hope to bring you pictures of this party next week.

Until then how about this fabulous cake from the Pink Cake Box , sadly they are not in the UK but I do love their creativity in cake design.

A busy day

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Well it has been a busy today, firstly I was on air with Dave Monk on BBC Radio Essex discovering the cost of weddings for a guest. When you counter in the stag/hen celebrations, gift, outfit & overnight accommodation you realise weddings aren’t just expensive for the couple!

Straight after I met Tim Bowden a photographer from Suffolk who I hope to work with in the future. I loved his albums and the unobtrusive shots of guests.

Wedding planning guide (4)

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Congratulations you’re engaged! You’re on glad nine, your fiancée has declared his love and asked you to become his wife, you excitedly talk about the future and your wedding day. You dream about the dress, partying with your friends and of course becoming husband and wife.

But, then the panic sets in. Just how do you plan a wedding, where should you begin? In our fortnightly series we will break down how to organise a wedding like a professional wedding planner.

Tom & Mel

Tom & Mel

In our 4th instalment of our planning guide we talk about getting all those fabulous suppliers on board. The type of suppliers you could be hiring include:

  • Photographer
  • Videographer
  • Cake
  • Stationer
  • Transportation
  • Entertainment
  • Nanny/crèche
  • Décor specialist
  • Beautician/hairdresser

You can find suppliers through personal recommendation, bridal magazines, wedding directories, blogs, twitter, wedding fairs and venue recommended supplier lists.

Don’t rush into any decisions and make sure you make all the appropriate checks before confirming any. Don’t assume a wonderful website means they are a fabulous supplier, someone make be excellent at PR & marketing but have very little experience of the job itself. Ask to see references and when necessary copies of their insurance. Of course one of the best ways to select a supplier is via personal recommendation but, because a florist was perfect for say your cousins wedding, does it mean they are perfect for yours?

When comparing suppliers do so on a like for like basis, shortlist down to 2-3 before making your final decision. Once you have hired a supplier add them into a payment spreadsheet detailing when deposits are needed, final payment details, address & any special instructions. This helps you keep track of your wedding expenditure.

Stay in touch with your suppliers advising them of any changes to your wedding like design but esp. if you have changed the date or venue!

Stylish touches for dinner parties

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I love entertaining at home with friends and family whether formal dinner parties or summer BBQ’s. No matter how informal a gathering might be, I still like to put a lot of effort into the little touches. After all I do have a reputation to keep. Therefore when I discovered Notonthehighstreet I just had to share it with you.

I tend to concentrate on lighting & table styling as these are the elements that make the most impact. Two things are a given at gatherings, I always use linen napkins and everyone will know where they are sitting!

Kerry Morgan rebranding

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I’m loving the new website from Kerry Morgan and in particular her new logo. I’ve been working with Kerry since 2004 and have seen her business evolve in that time. I love the fact she doesnt get complacent, she is always looking at ways to expand her knowledge and offer something new to her clients. Do visit her website and blog , if you look at her buzz page you will see some of my weddings featured as well.

My fav. shot is of a bride in the snow which looks at first glance like a tropical beach.

Kerry will be guest blogging very soon for us.

I’m loving - Beau Coup

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

I have a confession to make, I’m not a huge fan of wedding favours. I think sometimes they are a waste of money and rarely get taken home by the guests. BUT I do think the best favours are edible treats as invariably these are always appreciated by guests.

Therefore I was delighted to discover Beau Coup a US favour company, they do ship to the UK but even if you do not use them I just know you will love their products. I’ve created a board of my favourites including a sachet of hot chocolate, petit fours and pop corn.
