Surviving the heatwave

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Over the last few years I have given lots of advice on contingency plans for bad weather so it seems appropriate that in our current heatwave I should give similar advice for surviving the heat. Below are my top tips for ensuring neither you nor your guests ‘melt’.

Wedding Ice cream trike

Wedding Ice cream trike

Ceremony

  1. Before the ceremony starts have ushers serve jugs of iced water or lemonade to cool guests down. Please note this has to take place outside the church/registered room as no beverages are allowed inside the room.
  2. Organise fans for the female guests, the ushers could hand them out of place on alternate chairs ready for when guests take their seats.
  3. Make sure there is ventillation in the ceremony location with windows open or hire in a small air conditioner unit.
  4. Buy a small water spray to spray yourself before walking down the aisle
  5. Make sure YOU have some water before entering the church/ceremony location. A bride collapsing from dehydration would not be good !

Drink Reception

  1. When deciding what drink to have for the drink reception there is a tendancy to over order on champagne and under order on soft drink. In this heat you need to make sure there is enough soft drink available. Try iced water, elderflower, lemonade or apple juice
  2. Why not hire a wedding ice cream trike to cool guests down
  3. Make sure there is enough shaded areas for guests and musicians.
  4. Have a small basket of suncream to prevent any guests getting sunburnt.
Shaded Musicians

The wedding breakfast

  1. At the dinner table invite gentlemen to remove their ties and dinner jackets
  2. Make sure the room is well ventillated
  3. Have a least 2 bottles of still & sparkling water on each table
  4. Consider having a cold starter rather then hot
  5. Consider having some salads to serve alongside the meal

THEME

Theme you ask? Oh yes, I’m not talking elaborate themed events but more about matching colours and textures together. Ensuring the flowers complement the theme, creating beautiful lighting, hiring in good quality linen and sin above all sins, ensuring no-one even thinks about putting those napkins into swans or bishops hats.

What about the entertainment, why isn’t a string quartet and disco enough? Before you know it she is talking about magicians, silhouette artists and singing waiters, just what is all that about? Oh yes weddings are big business now and not just in money, its all about creating a seamless design and ensuring all guests leave thinking what a great wedding.

THE OUTFIT

For most mothers, the process of choosing a wedding outfit can become so emotional because they truly want to find an outfit that their daughter will love. They want an outfit that makes them feel beautiful on their daughter’s big day, a dress that will bring a smile to both the bride’s and their own faces, and of course they want to shine over and beyond every other guest. But is buying the right outfit as easy as it sounds? Janet from Tiptree thought choosing her outfit was one of the most stressful parts of the wedding “all the designs were too frumpy and all were pastel colours. The extortionate prices didn’t much the quality of the fabrics and designs, finding one in the right colour to suit me was also difficult“.

Toni

Toni

I advise talking with your daughter about the wedding theme and colours, there is no sense choosing an outfit that clashes with all the flowers and décor! Secondly think about a colour analysis with Colour Me Beautiful or House of Colour, this gives you a chance to see what colours best suit your skin tone and what styles to avoid or aim for. You then need to think about the season, if it’s in winter think about a smart trouser suit with accentuating silk scarves. In summer you want a dress that is not too heavy, linen is great but does it crease? If you choose a hat or fascinator, talk with the designer about the weather conditions, how will the rain affect it and how can it be secured when windy?

PAMPERING

Now is the time for some well deserved pampering with your daughter giving you the opportunity to catch up and relax before the wedding. On the wedding day have your hair professionally styled and makeup applied by a trained beautician. Finally remember to relax, if any small hiccups occur, does it matter? This is your daughters wedding so shine and enjoy it.

THE DAY ITSELF

Your daughter is nervous, scared and excited, the last thing she needs is her Mother flapping around. Ok, hear me out before you shout out in horror. I’ve seen it happen so many times, the bride is with her bridesmaids trying to calm down when the Mother enters, have you done x, y, z. did you confirm the drive, why isn’t he here, where’s the photographer, WHY AREN’T you dressed. Stop, breathe, go find someone else to scream these concerns to, a best man or wedding planner. Just don’t say it to the bride, just hug and kiss her, calm down and relax. “I was very calm before my Mum came in panicking about nothing” Said one Anon bride. There are some things you can’t control like the weather but everything else can be controlled, delegate someone whether the venue staff, a wedding planner or best man to run the schedule and deal with problems on the day so you are not disturbed .

FINAL THOUGHTS

As hard as it may be, remember this is your daughters wedding. You can help, advise and support, but remember the final decision should always be hers. Do you know families are the cause of so much stress for a bride leading up to her wedding day? Family seem to think they have a right to demand x, y and z from the bride & groom. Think I’m exaggerating? Common scenarios include complaining when accommodation or transport isn’t provided, asking why a cousin’s new boyfriend can’t come or insisting that they must sit next to such and such relative by the top table!

I shall leave you with one lovely quote from one of my Mother of the Bride.

Lovely as the day is, full of love, laughter, emotion and happiness - after that comes the next day.  Rather like having a baby, except the baby is gone away, on honeymoon, she is not your baby any more but someone’s wife and there is this great sense of loss.  But then the age-old saying “you have not lost a daughter but gained a son” comes to mind and you realise that having children is indeed one of life’s greatest rewards.

Mother of the Bride Pt 1

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

When your daughter announces she is getting married, emotion and excitement can set in, your little girl is asking for your advice on her wedding. Together you embark on a shopping trip to choose that all important dress, you delight at how your beautiful daughter is transformed into a stunning bride. You sigh with relief knowing the dress has been chosen but then everyone asks about the organization, wanting to know every little detail. You want to help your daughter but at the same time you want her to enjoy the planning, where is the line between assisting your daughter and taking over?

ORGANISATION

Every bride is different, some want their Mothers to literally organise the whole event, perhaps their careers mean they have little time or they no longer live in the area where they intend to marry. They may want you to have little or no input and perhaps she wants you to organise with her?

wedding-planner-ms

M&S Wedding Planner Folder

Surely planning a wedding can’t be that difficult? In the beginning when you help choose a venue for your daughter it probably all seems like a breeze. You help with decisions on which supplier to book but try desperately not to ‘interfere’, being involved but also talking a step back can be hard.  ‘At times I felt I was not in control, not always knowing what was happening as I wasn’t making the decisions. But, at the same time I didn’t want more to do, very strange feeling‘ explains Janet

To start with why not buy her a beautiful wedding planner folder to keep all clippings, swatches and receipts in? M&S have some stunning versions. If you are computer literate start a spreadsheet to keep track of the budget both approx. and actual, guest list, supplier payments and contacts of all supplier. By just taking over the payments or reminders of payments will help immensely.

Then go through the timeline with your daughter and assign tasks, what can you do on her behalf? Perhaps you can manage the invitations, RSVP’s and seeing to all guest needs like transport and accommodation? Then every month just catch up with who she has booked, talk about the design. Be there to help take over any tasks that are worrying her.

Remember, times have changed, gone are the days of holding the reception in a local hotel and being happy with Bucks Fizz, roast dinner, disco and finger buffet in evening! Mention this to your daughter and she might display a look of horror on her face. Today its all about choosing the right venue that matches the couples expectations, selecting the right suppliers to create their dream wedding and of course coming up with the theme.

Real wedding: Karen & Rob

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

In pt 2 of our report on Karen & Robs (you can see pt 1 here) party we show you some more of the design details used throughout the evening. Because we wanted the party to reflect the slightly bohemian personalities of Rob & Karen we decided to used lots of accessories from the house. We used candle holders, lanterns and even christmas decorations on the design. Lisa and I had such fun in the morning bringing all the elements together.

On alternate tables to the flowers we had pink glass candelabras with gold candles. The tables were clothed in white linen with a gold satin runner.

We placed various lanterns outside on pathways, below is an image which includes the invitations made by Momental Designs.

We used christmas decorations in vases but also hung mini mirror balls from the trees.

Organza material was used along the metal fence with little christmas decorations hanging from it.

Karen bought some blackboard paint and used on some old wood she had, we then wrote all the drinks on the board and once sold crossed them out. It was very effective and looked great.

Venue Focus: Gosfield Hall

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Each month we highlight one of the beautiful venues we have worked at or particularly love, in and around East Anglia. Today we explore Gosfield Hall in Essex.

Gosfield Hall

Gosfield Hall

History

Gosfield Hall is a stunning Georgian manor house built in 1545 and was once a Royal residence boasting a long history of noble connections. Queen Elizabeth I visited in the 16th century and during the French Revolution it was the home of King Louis XVIII.

Present Day

Gosfield Hall is offered only on an exclusive basis meaning there will be no other brides wandering round on your wedding day. The interior is incredibly grand and decadent perfect for creating a dream day for a brides wedding. The mansion is set amongst 10 acres of parkland although amazingly only an hours away from London making it a perfect location.

Ceremony

Ceremonies take place in the Queens Gallery which is truly stunning; it has a 120ft aisle ensuring the brides gets to make a dramatic entrance. Alternatively the carriageway outside is now licensed ideal for summer weddings.

Receptions

The wedding breakfast takes place in the ballroom for 116 guests. The room has polished floors, panelled walls, crystal chandeliers, elegant fireplace and the most amazing ceiling. The room exudes luxury. All catering is done in house.

You also get the services of their in-house co-ordinators from about 12 weeks before the wedding, they are very organised and experienced as they organise weddings pretty much daily. Real Wedding: Karen & Rob

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

At new year Karen & Rob were married in a small ceremony in Thailand. They contacted me to organise a celebration of their wedding for friends and family.

Karen & Rob

Karen & Rob

They wanted it to reflect their eccentric personalities with a big emphasis on it being a party, therefore there were no wedding elements like cake cutting, first dance or speeches. We decided to hold the party in their garden in May when the weather was likely to be warmer. Chinese Hat marquees took over the whole garden from the kitchen to the summer house, this ensured that everyone was undercover and gave the party a more magical feel.

Pink FLowers

Karen looked stunning in her dress of reminded me of a greek goddess, it was from the Manuel Mota range from Pronovias Bond Street. The flowers were in pink & green vases from Ikea and filled with flowers by Karens Mum.

When guests arrived they were greeted with a selection of drinks and canapees served by Bespoke Caterers.

Wedding Planning Guide (5)

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Congratulations you’re engaged! You’re on glad nine, your fiancée has declared his love and asked you to become his wife, you excitedly talk about the future and your wedding day. You dream about the dress, partying with your friends and of course becoming husband and wife.

But, then the panic sets in. Just how do you plan a wedding, where should you begin? In our fortnightly series we will break down how to organise a wedding like a professional wedding planner.

 cg-056

In our 5th instalment of our planning guide we talk about some of your suppliers in more depth.

Photographer

Think about what you want from your photos. Do you want an album of modern images or would you prefer to buy your own high street version? Is it vital to have a CD of images to print and share with friends around the world? Will you want traditional posed photos or mainly reportage? Personally I think a good photographer is vital to capture all your memories from the day. Is the photographer willing to work with you and your vision or do they seem set in their ways? There are many styles to choose from traditional, modern, artistic so browse photographer websites to see what style suits you best. Some of my favourites are: Harvey Collard, Kerry Morgan, Lloyd Dobbie, Tim Bowden

 Videographer

Videos are gaining popularity after a decline in recent years. Visit some fairs and do some internet based research. Ask to see actual wedding demos and not a show reel which of course has been edited superbly as a sales tool. Has it been shot in focus and is the editing seamless. What effects have they included, does it add to the film or detract from the footage itself? What is included in the price and what is extra. If you do not want a traditional video then what about Super 8 cine film. It’s very stylish and has a classic vintage feel, this does tend to cost more then standard video/DVD filming.

Entertainment

Of course you will want your guests fully entertained on the day both day and evening, the options are literally endless. To begin will you want any professional singers or musicians for the ceremony? As with everything else check references and demos. Back at the reception the musicians can continue playing or you can book additional entertainment. In the evening a band or disco is the most popular options but to get your thinking caps on here are a few more choices for the day/evening. A good agency will have most of these on their books.

  • Harpist
  • String quartet
  • Jukebox
  • Opera Singers
  • Gospel singers
  • Guitarist
  • Pianist
  • Caricature
  • Silhouette Artist
  • Magician
  • Comedian
  • Life statues
  • Casino
  • Professional dancers
  • Tribute bands
  • Look-alikes
  • Party bands
  • Discos

Caterers

If your venue allows outside catering or you are having a marquee then you need to start looking for good reputable caterers. Does the venue have a list of recommended companies familiar with the venue kitchen & layout? If not look through local wedding magazines, wedding fairs and the internet. Ask whether they have experience of weddings and check their relevant insurance & food & safety certificates. Check what is included in the price and what is extra, for example some companies have a set price including linen, staff and equipment whereas others charge these items separately. How many staff will they have on the day, any less then 1 per table of 10 then start to worry! Ask how long they need to serve your wedding sufficiently and how big they need the catering tent (if needed) should be. And finally have a food tasting nearer the time to choose your menu, cutlery, crockery & glassware.

 champagne-glasses

Dress

This is one of those moments you have been dreaming about for years so make the most of it. Make a list of some bridal shops to visit, why not do some local and some in town? Decide who you want to go with you and set a girly date. Start to think about the styles you like and of course dislike but enter this stage of planning with an open mind. The dress style you like is not necessary the style that suits you. Make notes as to what you liked or disliked about the dress so you remember when digesting the day afterwards. If you cannot find one you like then think about browsing US websites, even with shipping and additional seamstress costs it may work out cheaper. Otherwise why not have an individual dress made for you, its not as expensive as you may think. Once the dress has been chosen you need to select a veil, shoes and accessories.

Top Tip - don’t make too many appointments in one day otherwise you will be checking your watch constantly, try to fit in afternoon tea or lunch to discuss the dresses with your Mother or bridesmaids.

I recently discovered Emma Embery who has been a fashion designer for 11 years. She specialises in her signature style of embroidery & embellishment. She has a range of dresses, tops and slips some of which perfect for the honeymoon, but I especially liked her headdresses.
