Why we love engagement shoots

Recently we planned a wedding for two lovely gentlemen, one of which is Chinese and so we incorporated Chinese themes and traditions into the design of their day.  One of the specific ideas the guys wanted to have was a pre-wedding shoot (engagement shoot) as this is very big in China.  This got me thinking; Do couples take advantage of having an Engagement Shoot before the big day?

Most people hate having their photo taken and your wedding day will see you being snapped in all directions more than you ever thought possible!  You are the star attraction after all.  So by having a relaxed pre wedding shoot can only be a good thing by getting you warmed up for the big day.  It is a great opportunity to get to know your photographer and for them to get to know you.  They will be able to suss out your “best side” and find what angles work for you.  Knowing how they work and feeling relaxed in front of them is one of the key elements to getting great shots.

Personally, I also think this a fab way of having some beautiful images that you could possibly use for Save the Dates, Invites or even a signing board.  You could even hold a number in each shot which could become your table numbers on your actual wedding day. Or if you are like me just sit and look through the images and get even more excited for your big day!

Two photographers we love to work with have seen an increase in engagement shoots and find it a great way to get to know a couple before the day itself.

Simon Carr says “Engagement shoots are a great way to celebrate your relationship. Either in London, using some of the landmarks, or closer to home at a location that is special to you both. I also find it a great way to interact with clients prior to the wedding, it means they’re far more relaxed in front of a camera

I choose gentle direction as opposed to lots of cheesy poses, this ensures my clients look fantastic but also still like them.  The results are a set of pictures to be proud of.  All of the people I have photographed over the years say that they actually really enjoyed it and they weren’t expecting too. ”
